Think Like a Smart Person

This week's chapter in Steal Like an Artist had all kinds of good advice about what kinds of people to follow for inspiration, making work instead of being angry, and keeping a praise file.

In this chapter, Kleon tells us that we need to ignore our enemies and make friends.  "That means following the best people online, the people who are way smarter than you".  I will often be on sites like Tumblr or Strikingly to look at the work of other people.  I'll look at what they've done and think, "wow, that's such a great idea!  I wish I could think like they do!"  So, I'll start following these people, trying to see how I can make my work successful like theirs, but still my own.

As for my fan letter, it was very difficult to narrow it down to one person to write to.  I chose to write to Rebecca Sugar:

Dear Rebecca Sugar,

I absolutely adore your work!  I really didn't discover you until I first began looking into your show, Stephen Universe.  It didn't take me long to get sucked into the story of the show and copying the style of its art for fun.  Soon after all this, I began researching more on your work and your career.  You've been such an inspiration to me through your art, music and writing.  I actually started playing ukulele because of you and the songs you have written for it.  I really admire the creativeness of your career and the feelings you convey through it.  I enjoy keeping up with what you do in your career!

As for Henry Rollins,

I didn't realize who he was until I researched him.  I recognized him from the band, Black Flag.  I had no idea in did so many other things!  He's a comedian, an activist, a journalist, radio host, publisher, an actor (I saw he was in an episode of Adventure Time), and a musician in a few bands as well as a solo career.  I was really impressed with what a versatile person he is.  He just made me wonder how one person could be so successful in so many things!

Before I began reading, I thought that  this was going to be another text book to read.  Now that I've read the first chapter (and a few more), I find it very interesting!  The author has helpful advice to give about creating work and finding inspiration.  Each chapter has a thought or scenario that feels relatable to something I've gone through in the creative process. Personally, I wouldn't feel right stealing an idea from someone else.  However, the author states in the book that "all creative work builds on what came before.  Nothing is completely original".  When I was a kid, I had a lot of books on how to draw different things from Marvel superheroes to Disney Princesses.  Now that I've older, I see people taking these concepts of others' ideas and putting their own spin on them. Productive Procrastination

This week, in chapter 5 of "Steal Like an Artist", we were given some interesting advice to practice "productive procrastination".  Kleon explained to us that it's good to have some side projects and hobbies.  That way, when we get sick of working on one project, we can spend time on a different one.  He tells us to take time to do nothing, to get bored. Reading this, I wondered how he could do that.  I feel like I need every available minute I have to concentrate on my assignments for class!  I realized after reading this chapter that I've gotten to busy that I've abandoned all of my side projects and my "just for fun" pieces. Hello!  My name is Hannah Wilson.  I am a graphic design major.  I have also graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a degree in 2D Art.   I often draw inspiration from the things I enjoy doing or my surroundings.   I always enjoy looking at the work of others just to see the different styles of design use.  Seeing the different styles of designers allows me to draw inspiration for my own work at times.  If I am ever stuck on how to arrange images or pair images with text, I compare other designs to understand what others consider to be successful work.
